Farming Through Seasons

Farming is a task that is entirely dependant on seasons. Different tasks are done according to the time of year and the natural variations of the climate. There are so many jobs to do, although winter tends to be the quietest time as all the animals come in to their winter accommodation. Mostly at this time we are concentrating on feeding and making sure the animals are comfortable and have plenty of straw to lay on. Come the spring, things get a lot busier. We will we start to pot up seeds and to get the ground ready to grow crops, rolling the paddocks, checking fencing and gates are secure, making sure water troughs and pipes are not leaking and many other tasks, all in preparation for the animals to go back outside. Summer brings the hot weather we need to heat up the ground and get our crops growing, We also have to make sure our livestock have plenty of fresh water to drink and shelter from the sun (pigs can get sunburn!). Pigs also love to have a wallow, which is basically a wet muddy patch that they can lay in to cool off. Our sheep have to be sheared in the summer and need access to pastureland and fresh water. Autumn is, hopefully, when all the hard work pays off and the crops can be harvested, and once this is done, we start to wind down for the coming winter and the cycle begins again.
