Cows

We have a small herd of Jersey cows which are well known for these key attributes:

    • Small to Medium Frame: Jersey cows are one of the smallest dairy breeds. They typically weigh between 800 and 1,200 pounds (around 360 to 540 kg).

    • Compact Body: They have a well-proportioned, compact body with a deep, wide ribcage, which contributes to their efficient milk production.

  • •      Colour: Jerseys are typically light brown to dark fawn in colour, with variations ranging from a golden tan to almost a reddish-brown. They often have white markings on their face, legs, or underbelly.

    •      Coat: Their coats are short and smooth, giving them a sleek appearance.

  • •      High Butterfat Content: Jersey cows are renowned for producing milk with a high butterfat content, which makes their milk ideal for producing cheese, butter, and other dairy products.Their butterfat content typically ranges from 4.5% to 5.5%, which is higher than most other dairy breeds.

    •      Milk Yield: While they may not produce as much milk in volume compared to larger breeds like Holsteins, they are very efficient producers relative to their size. Their milk production can range from 5,000 to 8,000 litres per year, depending on factors like genetics and diet.

  • •      Gentle and Friendly: Jersey cows are known for their docile and calm nature. They tend to be friendly and easy to handle, making them a good choice for small farms or familyoperated dairies.

    •      Intelligent: They are also known to be quite intelligent and curious, often engaging with their environment and the people around them.

  • •      Hardiness: Jersey cows are hardy animals that adapt well to a variety of climates. They are less prone to heat stress compared to some larger breeds, making them suitable for warmer environments.

    •      Disease Resistance: They are generally considered to be healthy and disease-resistant, though like all cattle, they are susceptible to common bovine diseases.

  • Feed Efficiency: Jerseys are excellent at converting feed into milk and are known for their efficient use of forage and grain. This makes them a cost-effective breed for dairy farmers, as they require less feed than larger breeds to produce the same amount of milk in terms of quality.

  • Fertility: Jersey cows are known for their good fertility and calving ease. They typically have fewer complications during birth compared to larger breeds, and they often produce healthy calves.

  • •      Climate Adaptability: While Jerseys can thrive in most climates, they are particularly wellsuited to warmer, more temperate climates. Their smaller size and fine coat help them deal with heat better than larger breeds.

    •      Grazing Efficiency: Jerseys are well-suited for grazing, which is often an important aspect of dairy farming. They can maintain high levels of milk production from pasture-based diets.

  • •      Small, Refined Head: Jerseys have a characteristic refined, wedge-shaped head with large, dark eyes that give them an alert and gentle expression.

    •      Light-coloured Muzzle: Their noses are often light-coloured or white, which contrasts with the darker colour of their face and body.

  • •      Cost-Effective Dairy Production: Due to their high milk quality, particularly in terms of butterfat, and relatively low feed requirements, Jersey cows are often chosen for dairies that prioritize premium dairy products such as butter and cheese.

    •      High Efficiency for Smaller Farms: Due to their smaller size and efficient feed conversion, Jerseys are particularly popular among smaller-scale or family-owned dairy operations.

Overall, Jersey cows are prized for their excellent milk quality, friendly temperament, and adaptability, making them a favourite among many dairy farmers worldwide and why they are a great addition to Little Haven Farm.
